    Dr. Bakul Dholakia is a former Director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. He served with IIM-A for a period of 33 years in various capacities and has been recognized as one of the finest teachers of the institute. He is a PhD in economics and has also served on various committees of the Government of India as an expert in the areas of finance and economics. He is a recipient of the Padmashree award. He is also recognized for his efforts to gain more autonomy for the IIMs. In recognition of his outstanding services as a management guru, he has been presented with this award.

    Shri. Rajdeep Sardesai is the CEO of the news channel CNN-IBN7, which has gained tremendous viewership in a very short time. He began his career as a newspaper journalist and soon moved over to TV journalism with NDTV India. He is known for his forthright reportage and his program ‘The Big Fight’, which he presented when he was with NDTV India, won many laurels. He also holds a law degree from the Oxford University. Shri. Rajdeep Sardesai has been awarded the Padmashri recently by the President of India. He has been presented this award due to his effective use of mass media like television for public awakening.

    Shri. Baijayant (Jay) Panda is a Rajya Sabha MP of the Biju Janata Dal from Orissa. He belongs to the generation of young and educated politicians of India who have taken up politics as a career for the service of the society, in spite of having excellent academic qualifications. He is working for the alleviation of poverty in his home state of Orissa, which happens to be one of the poorest states of India. He has been presented the Bharat Asmita Jana Pratinidhi Shrestha award for his exemplary parliamentary practices for the greater good of the society.

    Dr. Raman Singh is the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. He was also a Minister of State in the cabinet of Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the NDA regime in India. A doctor by qualification, Dr. Raman Singh has been in active politics for nearly thirty years. For the benefit of the people of his state living below the poverty line, he recently launched a scheme to sell rice at Rs. 3/- per kg, which has earned him the goodwill of the people. In recognition of his long and outstanding services as an elected representative, he has been honoured with the Bharat Asmita Jana Pratinidhi Shrestha (Special) award.

She was among the first journalists to have reported from the battle arena during the Kargil war of 1999, from the tsunami affected areas in 2004 and the devastating earthquake in Kashmir in 2005. Over the years, she has produced value based programmes like 'We the People', which provide the right platform for the general public to voice their opinions on subjects that affect their daily lives.

    Shri. Naveen Jindal is the Chairman, Jindal Steels Ltd. and a Member of Parliament, Indian National Congress in the present Lok Sabha. He undertook a diligent and successful struggle to display the national flag in his home, office or on his person on any day of the year, which was not permitted under the previous National Flag Code. The National Flag could be displayed only on selected days earlier. Shri. Naveen Jindal was given this award for his determination to promote the democratic values by enabling the citizens of India to have the basic right of displaying the national flag on any day as a symbol of their national pride.

    Shri. R. R. Patil is the Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister of Maharashtra. He has risen from a very humble background to a position of this eminence by sheer hard work, honesty and the will to work for the good of the people. He is known for his fearless and forthright decisions and frank oratory. In spite of the multiple problems facing the state, he has managed to maintain a high image not only of himself, but also of the state police department. He is respected as an able minister and administrator.






  • For the first edition of the awards ceremony, MIT Pune was honoured to have Shri. Somnath Chatterjee, Hon’ble Speaker - Lok Sabha, preside over the function and give away the awards on February 3, 2005. A host of dignitaries attended the function, in the presence of students from across Pune city. The following were the honorees.

    Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan is the Founder and National Coordinator of Lok Satta, a Hyderabad-based NGO committed to democratic reforms for good governance. Lok Satta has done groundbreaking work in rehabilitation of thousands of displaced families and has irrigated an astounding 200,000 acres of land with the help of people’s participation. It has also carried out projects like post poll surveys to determine the magnitude of bogus voting, and non partisan people’s movement to bring about better governance.

    There were two immensely deserving candidates for this award. The first one was Shri. Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology. Both, the industry as well as the people appreciate Shri. Maran’s pragmatic approach to the key portfolios being handled by him. He has shown distinctive qualities of leadership and a tremendous sense of service. He has an illustrious family background, having inherited the nuances of politics as well as industry, which have resulted in him taking astute policy decisions

    Dr. Shrikant Jichkar
    This special award was presented to late Dr. Shrikant Jichkar, whose untimely demise has failed to wash away his strong following on account of his selfless contribution to our nation. An academician par excellence, Dr. Jichkar was one of the youngest persons ever to hold office as a cabinet minister, and certainly amongst the most educated till date. Dr. Jichkar had a multitude of qualifications to his name in multiple academic disciplines. A true scholar, Dr. Jichkar will always be remembered as an able minister and an excellent parliamentarian.
