About Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director, IIM Calcutta
Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri graduated from I.I.T. Kharagpur in 1972 with a B.Tech (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering. Subsequently he worked for Larsen and Toubro Limited in their Powai Works, Mumbai as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. In 1975 he joined the doctoral programme (Fellow Programme in Management) at I.I.M. Ahmedabad where he specialized in Business Policy. On completion of his doctoral studies in 1979 he joined Calico Mills, Ahmedabad where he initially worked as Staff Assistant to the Vice-Chairman and Managing Director and later as Manager – Cloth Department and Manager – Organization Development Cell.
In 1981 Prof. Chaudhuri moved into academics and joined his alma-mater I.I.M. Ahmedabad as an Assistant Professor in the Business Policy Area. He has been associated I.I.M. Ahmedabad as a faculty member since then. In November 2002 he joined I.I.M. Calcutta as the Director.
Prof. Chaudhuri has held faculty and administrative positions in several institutions of higher learning in his long career. During August 1989 – August 1991 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Management, College of Business and Administration, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois, USA; Visiting Professor in the Strategy, Organization and Human Resources Group at ESCP – Paris School of Management during October – December, 1998; and Dean of the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT, Kharagpur during the period May 2000 to December 2001.
Prof. Chaudhuri’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of strategic management, management of technology and innovation and international management. In the early 1980s he pioneered work in the field of Management of Technology and organizational several management development programmes on the subject at IIM Ahmedabad on the basis of his research. In the nineties he organized MDPs on Acquisition and Assimilation of Foreign Technology in collaboration with the DSIR, GOI; Japanese Management and International Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances. At IIMA he directed several important MDPs offered by the Institute like the Management Education Programme (4 ½ months), Middle Management Programme (1month) and Senior Management Programme (3 weeks), as well as customised programmes at senior and top levels for a number of companies in India and the Royal Danish Embassy, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Prof. Chaudhuri has published a number of research based papers in national and international journals and has presented several papers in several national and international conferences. He has also co-authored a book titled Entry Strategies and Growth in Foreign Markets published by Oxford. In 1988 he was awarded a Senior Fulbright Fellowship at U.C., Berkeley and has also been a Visiting Scholar at Twente University of Technology, Enschede, The Netherlands, in the Technology and Development Group.
Prof. Chaudhuri has been a consultant to several organizations both in the private and public sectors. Besides, he has also been a consultant to The World Bank. In the early to mid nineties he led the Indian part of a major international research effort sponsored by the World Bank on Institutional and Policy Priorities for Industrial Technological Development. This was an international study involving eight countries and in India it covered seven industries. The countries involved were Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, India, Hungary, Canada and Mexico.
Currently he sits on the boards/governing councils of several organizations/ institutions, including GVFL Trustee Company, Ahmedabad; Xavier’s Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar; Indian Jute Industries’ Research Association, Kolkata; Assam Institute of Management, Guwahati; Gujarat Industries Power Co. Ltd.; and Gontermann Piepers Ltd. Currently he is a member of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council set up by the Government of India
